APO ISLAND is one of the best and most successful examples of a community based sanctuary. It is so famous that the Shedd Aquarium of Chicago patterned its main exhibit after the island. Apo Island is very famous for its sea turtles. Sea turtles are abundant in Apo Island because it is the feeding ground of female sea turtles. They feed on algaes, sponges and sea grasses. The lack of poachers in the protected marine sanctuary and plenty of food keeps the sea turtles coming back. Female sea turtles have shorter tail than the long lizard like tail of the male sea turtles. There are two kinds of sea turtles that visits Apo Island. The Green Sea Turtles and the Hawkbill Sea Turtles. Green sea turtles although commonly brown in color, got its name after the green fats found beneath thier shell which turns the soup green.
